Introduction to PDM and its latest progress

I. production of PDM

For manufacturing enterprises, although the computer-aided technology of each unit has become increasingly mature, each automation unit has its own system and lacks effective information communication and coordination with each other, which is the so-called "information island" problem. In this case, many enterprises have realized that the orderly management of information will become the key factor for them to maintain a leading position in the future competition

product data management (PDM) is a new management idea and technology under this background. PDM can be defined as a technology that takes software technology as the foundation and products as the core to realize the integrated management of product related data, processes and resources. PDM is clearly positioned as facing manufacturing enterprises, taking products as the core of management, and taking data, process and resources as the three elements of management information. The two main lines of PDM information management are static product structure and dynamic product design process. All information organization and resource management are carried out around product design. This is also the key for PDM system to be different from other information management systems, such as management information system (MIS), material management system (MRP) and project management system (Project Management)

as a technology emerging at the end of the 20th century, PDM inherits and develops the core ideas of CIM and other technologies. Under the guidance of system engineering, it describes the product design data and design process with the concept of overall optimization, standardizes the product life cycle management, and maintains the consistency and traceability of product data. II. Development of PDM

the development of PDM technology can be divided into the following three stages: PDM system cooperating with CAD tools, production of professional PDM products and standardization of PDM

1. PDM system with CAD tools

early PDM products were born in the early 1980s. At that time, CAD had been widely used in enterprises. While enjoying the benefits brought by CAD, engineers had to waste a lot of time on finding the information needed for design. The demand for new methods of electronic data storage and acquisition became more and more urgent. In response to this demand, various CAD manufacturers have launched the first generation of PDM products with their own CAD software. The main goal of these products is to solve the storage and management problems of a large number of electronic data, and provide the function of maintaining the "electronic drawing warehouse". The first generation PDM products only alleviate the problem of "information island" to a certain extent, but there are still many problems such as weak system function, low integration ability and low openness

2. professional PDM products

through the continuous expansion of the functions of early PDM products, professional PDM products have finally emerged, such as metaphase of SDRC and Iman of UGS, which are the representatives of the second generation PDM products. Compared with the first generation PDM products, many new functions have emerged in the second generation PDM products, such as the management ability of various forms of product data within the product life cycle, the management of product structure and configuration, the control of electronic data release and change, and the parts classification management and query based on Group technology. At the same time, the integration ability and openness of the software have also been greatly improved, A few excellent PDM products can really realize enterprise level information integration and process integration. While the second generation PDM products have made great progress in technology, they have also achieved great success in business. PDM began to become an industry, and there were many companies specialized in developing, selling and implementing PDM, with a range of investment

3.pdm standardization stage

in February 1997, OMG published its PDM enabler standard draft. As the first international standard in the PDM field, this draft was developed with the participation of many leading manufacturers in the PDM field, such as IBM, SDRC, PTC, etc. The release of PDM enabler marks a new step in the standardization of PDM technology. Based on CORBA technology, PDM enabler puts forward a standard for PDM system function, PDM logic model and interoperability among multiple PDM systems. The formulation of this standard has laid a foundation for the development of a new generation of standardized PDM products

III. functional analysis of PDM

pdm technology has been widely used abroad. At present, there are more than 100 kinds of PDM software commercialized worldwide. Although there are many differences among these PDM products, generally speaking, most of them have the following main functions:

1. electronic database and document management

for most enterprises, many different computer systems (mainframe, workstation, PC, etc.) and different computer software are required to generate various data required throughout the product life cycle, These computer systems and software may also be built on different network systems. In this case, how to ensure that these data are always up-to-date and correct, and that these data can be fully shared throughout the enterprise, while ensuring that the data are not intentionally or unintentionally damaged according to the verification data of the experimental machine, these are urgent problems to be solved. The electronic database and document management of PDM provide the functions of storage, retrieval and management of distributed heterogeneous data. In the corrosion-resistant PDM of inorganic acid, alkali and salt, data access is completely transparent to users. Users do not need to care about the specific location of electronic data storage and whether the latest version they get is completed by the PDM system. The security mechanism of electronic database enables the administrator to define different roles and give these roles different data access permissions and ranges. By assigning corresponding roles to users, data can only be accessed or modified by authorized users. At the same time, the release and change of electronic data in PDM must go through the pre-defined approval process before it can take effect, so that users can always get the correct approved information.
